A Thousand Rivers

A host of memories flood my heart
Silent storms end in despair
I swim in a thousand rivers
No boat to carry me to shore.

  1. I like the way ¨host¨rhymes with ¨ghost¨- this certainly makes me feel haunted.

The blood pumping memories through your heart, servicing you, keeping you alive, carrying those memories too.

The boat is a mystery. Where is that boat you need? You are lost at sea. There are no passers by.

It´s a lonely piece. You face these memories alone maybe you feel. I feel sad for you, whoever the speaker in this poem is. It makes me sad indeed.

...and those silent storms, inner conflict perhaps? Unrest, but no voice.

Where is the shore? What will be there? Will there ever be a huge loud scary thunderous storm to release the pressure and pass on away?

I don´t know how my interpretation matches with author´s intentions.

  2. Every person who reads this person will have a different interpretation of this poem because everyone has a unique set of experiences with the words used in the poem.

When you thought about host for example, you rhymed it with ghost and the poem took on a haunted air. For me the host was an invading army, too large to be repelled and so the heart was overwhelmed. The heart too has been interpreted differently. You took it as the physical organ 'pumping memories' whereas for me the heart is the spiritual seat of emotions.

Overall I have referred to water in each line of the poem (flood, storm, rivers, boat) because water also alludes to the emotions. The flood is the loss of control, the storms are conflicts, as you rightly said, of memories that should really remain unremembered, the swimming in the thousand rivers is the perseverance and tenacity to keep going no matter what, and the boat is the lack of help. The mind is a lonely place. No one has access to it except yourself but sometimes when there are emotional upheavals, it would be nice to reach out and find help when you wanted it. Unfortunately, it is not always there.
